Adopting a Reach of the Lackawanna River
Starting this Spring, I am seriously considering adopting my own section of the
Lackawanna River…Some spots close to my home which could use some care are along the Lackawanna River from Parker Street Bridge down to the Sanderson Avenue bridge. This section of the Lackawanna River is located in the Plot section of Green Ridge in Scranton. Some of my ideas include transplanting some young Japanese Red Maple trees or the purple lilacs I have growing in my yard. I also have Rose of Sharon and other perennials which would really brighten up the riverbanks. Another idea I would like to try is to scatter a planting of native wild flower seeds, and see what happens. There are so many lovely areas along this section to just relax, enjoy and use the River. This is the reach of the Lackawanna River I use for trout fishing…
So, when I called the LRCA Last week, to get more information, this is what they sent me:
River Keepers and Trail Tenders are needed to adopt a reach of the Lackawanna River and Heritage Trail. We need you, your family, your co-workers and or business employees to ADOPT a reach of the River in your neighborhood or community. We have been working to develop a TRAIL along the entire 40 mile length of the Lackawanna River from Forest City, Carbondale, The Mid Valley, Scranton, The Down Valley to Pittston.
We don’t have the trail completed yet but we do have nearly 20 miles of Trail and River bank in Public Ownership. Each one of these sites needs someone to adopt and care for it. This can include something as simple as walking along a given reach of River/Trail once a week or so and picking up any litter you see. Get a few friends together on a Saturday in the spring and summer to cut grass and cut back weeds from a section of trail .
Work with LRCA and adopt a planting bed or install and help maintain native flowers and shrubs at a new planting area that you can help design and manage. Then go on and enjoy your adopted Trail reach or River bank. Have a picnic, go fishing or just pass the time of day watching the river flow. Call (570-207-7608) or E-mail us now and we’ll set you up with a nearby reach of the Beautiful Lackawanna!
While I am at it, I am going to see if the Plot Neighborhood Association would be interested in doing a section of their own, or even helping with mine. I’ll keep you posted on my progress!
