Spring???

Posted by Mike Rock at 1:46 am in Fishing, Gardens, Weather |

The record daily maximum snowfall of 1.8 inches was set at Avoca last Friday the 29th, breaking the old record of 1.1 set in 1968.Interesting…Can we looked forward to this every leap year??

I walked my yard this morning…Quite a few areas still snow covered, but I did see a few buds of spring poking through the still frozen ground, although no crocuses yet….

Plenty of seed catalogs have started arriving daily by mail and the web… Soon I’ll be deciding what we will be planting for this year and starting seeds that my other gardening friends have shared with me.

I am thinking of planting a big increase in the vegetables this year…All types of peppers, tomatoes, brussel sprouts and potatotes. I also started garlic late last Fall, which was my 1st attempt–and it looks like it will be a decent crop.. I guess we’ll see in late Spring how that that turns out….

Onion Sets should be arriving in grocery stores any day now…Wonder how much a pound they will be this year?  I think I paid about $1.19 a pound last year. Scallions, which onion Fruit and Vegetable Clip Art: page 1sets grow into, use to be 3 bunches for $1….Boy, have times changed…yesterday, while doing our weekly shopping they were at $1.19 a bunch! No scallions in my salads this week..

I bought a roll of Weed Ender Landscape fabric.  This product is suppose to eliminate weeds, warm the ground, you a bigger crop and much earlier harvest. It was not expensive, 3 ft x 50 ft for only $2.99. It’s my first time using this kind of stuff, I usually use old newspaper and mulch to keep weeds down and make the garden area look nicer with the colored mulch.

Cannot wait to get into my yard after the snow goes and it gets a whole lot warmer, so I can spring clean up of all the debris that found it’s way into my yard over the long winter. Its amazing what you might find, but never any $$!!.

And a final note….I sent away for my Senior Resident Lifetime fishing license–the last one I will ever have to purchase. I Hope it arrives in time for the start of Trout Season, which is in less than 2 weeks, on Saturday 12 April.  I am looking forward to another great year of fishing.  Another of life’s little pleasures…
