My Garden

scallions.jpgIn mid-April I planted my first batch of onion sets that will grow into scallions that will eventually wind up in one of my great salads .

I will continue to plant batches of around 50 sets every 2 weeks throughout the summer so I will have a continuous crop into the Fall.

Onion sets can be planted in the Spring as soon as the ground is workable and are very easy to grow; Generally they only take about 4 weeks to grow to a pickable size. When I pick the scallion, I usually put another set in the hole that remains.

As another part of my great salad, I also planted leaf lettuce and for the first time, romaine, which are both are cool weather crops.

tomatoes.jpgBecause there is always a chance of a plant killing frost in the spring, I usually wait until Memorial Day Weekend to plant my tomatoes, because by then the chance of the frost has past. The staple for any great salad, or tomato sandwich,I usually plant about 8 plants of different varieties, including BIG BOY, BEEFSTEAK, EARLY GIRL and 2 types of cherry tomatoes. Most of these varieties take about 72 days to mature, usually around mid or late August, depending on the summer weather.

I also plant at least 2 varieties of peppers: Cubanelle (also called Banana Peppers) and the old Garden favorite–Green Bell Peppers .

Last year I tried brussel sprouts for the first time, and I was very happy with the results but they do not become ready until late September, They need cooler weather and even a soft frost. They were delicious steamed with some melted butter.

While I am able to freeze peppers and the brussel sprouts for use all thru the Winter, with tomatoes I am not so lucky. I wish I could freeze tomatoes, as the ones you purchase in the store in the Winter are expensive and taste like cardboard colored red. I Love Gardening, And I really enjoy the Vegetables of my Hobby.

    Great post!

Now you just have to grow all the herbs to make the salad dressing for your super salad, and you will be all set!
