Donating Blood

Posted by Mike Rock at 1:19 am in Good Deeds, Health and Safety |

Every  2 seconds someone needs a blood transfusion…

Yet fewer than 5 % of the people who are able to give blood actually do so - and most of them give only once a year.

Did you know you can safely donate every 56 days - or as many as 6 times a year? I have been donating every 56 days for many years, and I have donated over 105 pints, or about 14 gallons.  I feel very good when I leave the donor station knowing that I have helped as many as 3 different people.

Blood is always in short supply; but, if just a few people read this, start donating, and become regular donors, it would be a big help.

Giving blood is quick, easy and safe!!

Here are recommendations from the American Red Cross to make your blood donating experience a pleasant one:

  1. Be sure you eat a balanced meal within 4 hours before you give blood and get a good night’s sleep.
  2. You must be 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds and be healthy.
  3. Read “What You Must Know Before Donating Blood”.
  4. Please bring photo I.D.
  5. Make sure you answer your health history questionnaire completely and truthfully.
  6. Your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and iron level will be checked. These steps determine whether you can donate blood today.
  7. Before you donate, let us know confidentially if we should use your blood
  8. You will be directed to a donor bed, where a  new, sterile needle will be used to draw the blood. This will be discarded after your donation.
  9. While your donation will take about 6 - 8 minutes, the  entire experience takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  10. Drink plenty of fluids before and after your donation.
