Donating Blood
Every 2 seconds someone needs a blood transfusion…                       Â
Yet fewer than 5 % of the people who are able to give blood actually do so - and most of them give only once a year. Â
Did you know you can safely donate every 56 days - or as many as 6 times a year? I have been donating every 56 days for many years, and I have donated over 105 pints, or about 14 gallons. I feel very good when I leave the donor station knowing that I have helped as many as 3 different people.Â
Blood is always in short supply; but, if just a few people read this, start donating, and become regular donors, it would be a big help. Â
Giving blood is quick, easy and safe!!
Here are recommendations from the American Red Cross to make your blood donating experience a pleasant one:
- Be sure you eat a balanced meal within 4 hours before you give blood and get a good night’s sleep.Â
- You must be 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds and be healthy.
- Read “What You Must Know Before Donating Blood”.
- Please bring photo I.D.Â
- Make sure you answer your health history questionnaire completely and truthfully.
- Your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and iron level will be checked. These steps determine whether you can donate blood today.
- Before you donate, let us know confidentially if we should use your bloodÂ
- You will be directed to a donor bed, where a new, sterile needle will be used to draw the blood. This will be discarded after your donation.
- While your donation will take about 6 - 8 minutes, the entire experience takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
- Drink plenty of fluids before and after your donation.
